I scream and toss the phone to the other end of the couch, as if this action will repel the men within it. Blendr is the most high-profile of a series of new location-based dating apps for straight people. In June, Grindr announced it now has four and a half million users six hundred thousand of them in the U. In truth, though, I tried Blendr not to find love, but at the behest of a bevy of Web developers.

Around the time that Blendr launched in September, , I wrote a short article declaring that the app was destined to fail. And not just among men. But when it comes to heterosexual-dating technology, all-male co-founders represent the wants and needs of only half of their target audience. They have to actually use it. Men are slightly overrepresented among dating-service users, according to a Duke University study, and when it comes to apps, men tend to be more willing to use location-based dating features.

A Northwestern University study found that men viewed more than three times as many profiles as women and were about forty per cent more likely than women to send a message or chat after viewing a profile. Both Web entrepreneurs and armchair sociologists will tell you that women are different. We prefer to meet someone in person, not just browse pics of his pecs.

As the movie unfolded, they bantered over text. The pair is still making plans for in-person meetings, but for now they are trying to make do with a remote romance. The rules of dating are uncertain in the best of times.

Even New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio weighed in to give dating advice earlier this month. “If you’re sick, don’t go on a date. If the date is sick.

Counting only confirmed or probable COVID—associated deaths, however, likely underestimates the number of deaths attributable to the pandemic. The counting of confirmed and probable COVID—associated deaths might not include deaths among persons with SARS-CoV-2 infection who did not access diagnostic testing, tested falsely negative, or became infected after testing negative, died outside of a health care setting, or for whom COVID was not suspected by a health care provider as a cause of death.

The objective of this report is to provide an estimate of all-cause excess deaths that have occurred in NYC in the setting of widespread community transmission of SARS-CoV Excess deaths refer to the number of deaths above expected seasonal baseline levels, regardless of the reported cause of death. Estimation of all-cause excess deaths is used as a nonspecific measure of the severity or impact of pandemics 4 and public health emergencies 5. Reporting of excess deaths might provide a more accurate measure of the impact of the pandemic.

DOHMH has developed an electronic vital statistics reporting system that provides a near complete count of all deaths that occur in NYC 6. Rapid reporting of the event of death using this electronic system allows timely surveillance of all deaths in NYC i. To estimate excess deaths in NYC during the COVID pandemic, a seasonal periodic regression model, as is routinely conducted for monitoring the impact of seasonal influenza 7 , was used.

Excess deaths were determined for the period March 11—May 2, , using mortality data from the period January 1, —May 2, and calculated as the difference between the seasonally expected baseline number and the reported number of all-cause deaths 7 , 8. A limitation of this approach is that it does not account for uncertainty in the reporting lag or completeness of these provisional data. The 5, excess deaths not identified as confirmed or probable COVID—associated deaths might have been directly or indirectly attributable to the pandemic.

When Tinder became available to all smartphone users in , it ushered in a new era in the history of romance. It aimed to give readers the backstory on marrying couples and, in the meantime, to explore how romance was changing with the times. But in , seven of the 53 couples profiled in the Vows column met on dating apps. The year before, 71 couples whose weddings were announced by the Times met on dating apps. A lot rides on your username—more than you may think. It needs to be simple but inviting. If you have a boring name, like Herbert, you probably died alone during the Great Depression. Your profile is like a canvas. Your words are like a paintbrush. All of which would be good news if you knew how to paint. However, drinking wine and painting a mug on a bad second date does not qualify you to be a painter of dating profiles. Try casting a wide net with an appealing and impossible balance of conflicting descriptors.

Have you ever finished a story and thought to yourself: “I just read my life on a page”? That’s how many women are responding to a New Yorker short story about a young woman’s shitty dating experience. If you haven’t yet read Cat Person by Kristen Roupenian , then stop what you’re doing right now and get to it. Oh, and while you’re at it, you should avert your eyes this very minute: spoilers abound.

The story depicts a dalliance between a year-old female student, Margot, and a man named Robert she meets while working at her local arthouse cinema. This is the story of a young woman navigating the at-times perilous path that is modern dating.

At times, she feels her life is in danger. At other times, she wonders what she’s done wrong. Her story is one that’s been lived by countless other women. In subtle ways, Robert’s changeable disposition makes Margot wonder if her words or actions have offended him. At first, she feels touched by his “vulnerability” but, she also seems to feel the need to atone somehow and make him feel better. And, the interactions are infused with an uncomfortable realism that will speak to the soul of anyone who’s ever been treated badly on a date.
